EVO 2022 will be taking place soon. EVO has been rather quiet compared to other events such as CEO 2022, which will take place in Orlando, Florida in June. That all changed last night when EVO made unexpected news, as well as a date for their upcoming game, reveal event. Unfortunately, the Super Smash Bros. games will not be included at the event.
On March 8th, at 5:00 p.m. PST, the EVO team will disclose all of the main titles that will be included at the tournament in August. Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, Tekken 7, and Guilty Gear Strive are among the games you can count on. But the good news wasn’t the only part of this announcement.
The Super Smash Bros. games are the only game series that will not be present in EVO 2022, according to the team. Ultimate and Melee, two highly competitive games, will not be making a comeback. The original announcement tweet can be found below.
In it, EVO confirms that the two games will not be released because of a disagreement with Nintendo, and thanks to the community for the historic events it has delivered since 2007. They also expressed optimism that they will be able to celebrate Smash’s history with them again in the future.
There are a couple of possibilities for why this happened. To begin with, Nintendo may be promoting the tournament circuit that they created in collaboration with Panda Global. If you don’t recall, Nintendo chose, in an unexpected move, to team up with eSports company Panda Global to create new competitions for Super Smash Bros. Melee and Ultimate in November 2021.
The second reason might be that Nintendo, with everything that occurred in 2020 surrounding the tournament and its personnel, as well as competitors and pundits, may just no longer want to be associated with it. Even though that happened a year and a half ago, it’s still a pretty reasonable explanation, given that everything transpired exactly around the time EVO 2020 was going to take place.
