New Zealand defeated India by 8 wickets and with 33 balls in hand at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday. It was the second match for the men in blues in this world cup and gaining victory here was much needed to come up in the points table. However New Zealand was very efficient from the starting of the match, and it never seemed like the Indians were really on the game.
Generally in the Dubai pitch, the captain who wins the toss wins 80% of the match there itself. And it happened just like that when India came to bat first and none of the top-order batsmen could stand for long including KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma.
Neither could Virat Kohli nor Rishabh Pant could deliver a counterattack to the Kiwis. With the joint efforts of Hardik Pandya scoring 23 of 24 balls and Ravindra Jadeja scoring 26 of 19 balls, India managed to get to a total of 110 runs in 20 overs losing 7 wickets.
New Zealand in reply started brilliantly, with their openers Martin Guptill and Daryl Mitchell scoring 20 of 17 balls and 49 of 35 balls respectively. Also with the help of captain Kane Williamson, the Kiwis chased down their low target in just 14.3 overs with the loss of 2 wickets and being able to elevate their run rate much higher.
Road to the finals for India
With this defeat, the road to the finals for India has become a bit tough. From this position, India has to win all their remaining games against Scotland, Afghanistan and Namibia with very high run rates, and also Pakistan and New Zealand being on the same group should lose their remaining matches.
