Maharani is a drama-based Indian Television series. It is created by Subhash Kapoor and directed by Karan Sharma. It consists of 1 season with 10 episodes. It was produced by Dimple Kharbanda and Naren Kumar and SonyLiv production company. It was released on the SonyLiv network on 28th May 2021.

Synopsis of the series

Maharani is a fictional political drama based in the 90’s era. The story is set in Bihar that revolves around Rani Bharti who is a homemaker and the wife of Bihar’s Chief Minister Bheema. It is a story of a woman who was forced to work with a male-dominated Bihar cabinet. She only cares about her husband and her house. She does not interfere much with other affairs. After his husband resigns from Bihar’s Chief Minister post she wants to pack her bags and go back to the village. But the story takes a turn. The Bihar’s CM and her husband were about to make an announcement about the name of his successor. While all the members of his party were waiting eagerly and excited to hear who has been appointed as his successor. But he makes Rani his successor, which was totally unexpected leaving everyone awestruck and surprised.

Maharani stars Huma Qureshi as Rani Bharti, Sohum Shah as Bheema Bharti, Amit Sial as Navin Kumar, Pramod Pathak as Mishraji, Kani Kusruti as Kaveri Sreedharan, Inaam Ul Haq as Parvez Alam, Vineet Kumar as Gauri Shankar Pandey, Sushil Pandey as Kunwar Singh, Atul Tiwari as Governor Govardhan Das, Aashiq Hussain as Prem Kumar, Kannan Arunachalam as DGP Siddhant Gautam, Harish Khanna as Shankar Mahto and many more secondary characters.

Talking about her part in Maharani, Huma Qureshi in a statement said, “I am excited and looking forward to the show streaming soon. We’ve got a great response to the teaser and I’m sure our viewers will be well entertained through the show. Playing Rani Bharati is multifaceted, she has various shades associated with her character and that has been a great honor to portray. To get into the skin of the character, we tried on various looks that helped establish the phases in her life.”

Critical Review

Maharani recieved mixed review as a whole. On the review aggregator website Reviews Den, it holds a score of 68% based on 31 reviews. Its average rating is 5.72/10.

Prathyush Parasuraman from the first post gave the series 3 stars and said that Huma Qureshi shines in a sanitized portrayal of Rani Devi. In Hindustan Times Rohan Nahar stated that the series is over-plotted yet underwritten. But the Times of India says it is a “well-structured screenplay”. Archika Khurana wrote in the Times of India that the web series is engaging at most times. While Rishit Roy Chowdhury of India Today stated that the series is about Saheb, Biwi Aur Bihar.
